READ THIS CAREFULLY!
FluteFest is a sight-reading festival, and everyone’s enjoyment depends on how seriously we each take this next part.
Please use the excerpts below to choose your level for the day.
*Warning!* These are not the same as last year’s levels!
We recommend giving yourself just 10 minutes to look over the excerpt of your choice, and then turn on your metronome and play it at the printed tempo marking. Record yourself. Listen to it. Does it sound effortless and musical? Were you able to pay attention to the dynamics and articulations? Compare it to the sample recording. How accurate were you on pitches and rhythms? If you only made a couple of mistakes, that’s the level for you. If you feel like you are in between levels, please choose the easier level. Remember, it’s about creating beautiful music and having fun with other flutists, and not about ego.
Keep in mind that a person’s sight-reading level is often a level or even two levels easier than what we could learn to perform given a week or two or even a few hours. You’ll only get two hours or less to sight-read AND rehearse with your group at FluteFest, so you don’t want to be bogged down worrying about technique.
Is Level 1 just a little too fast/high/rhythmic? Make a practice plan, and we’ll see you next year!
