Welcome! We're so excited that you're interested in FluteFest 2019!
If you know us, you know that we have a pretty awesome sense of humor. But, sometimes we need to be serious, like right now, for example. Because FluteFest will be really awkward and sad if people skip this next part.
(Don't skip this next part)
FluteFest is a sight-reading festival, so we have to get people grouped with other players of the same ability level. Most people don't enjoy feeling lost and out of their league, or frustrated because the people they are playing with can't keep up...so let's make sure everyone gets playing buddies who are on the same comfy level as themselves!
Please use the excerpts below to choose your level for the day. We'll make sure that you and the people around you have a great time!
*Warning!* (In case you thought you could skip this, hahaha) These are not the same as last year’s excerpts...
What’s the best way to do this?
We recommend giving yourself just 10 minutes to look over the excerpt of your choice, and then turn on your metronome and play it at the printed tempo marking. Record yourself. Listen to it. Does it sound effortless and musical? Were you able to pay attention to the dynamics and articulations? Compare it to the sample recording. How accurate were you on pitches and rhythms? If you only made a couple of mistakes, that’s the level for you. If you feel like you are in between levels, please choose the easier level. Remember, it’s about creating beautiful music and having fun with other flutists, and not about ego.
Also, keep in mind that your sight-reading level is often a level or even two or three levels easier than what you could learn to perform given a week or two or even a few hours. We all know and understand, and are in the same boat! So don’t be shy about leveling down. You’ll only get two hours or less to sight-read AND rehearse with your group at FluteFest, so you don’t want to be bogged down worrying about technique.
Is Level 1 just a little too fast/high/rhythmic? Make a practice plan, and we’ll see you next year!
